UC Riverside Academic Personnel Policy
Policy: Implementation of the Professional Researcher Salary Scales
Issued: March 20, 2000
Purpose
The Office of the President established salary scales with ranges for the steps of the Professional Research series, effective October 1, 1999. The bottom of the range represents a minimum salary that is 2% above last year (no parity applied) and the top of the range is equivalent to the corresponding professorial scale.
It is a systemwide goal to bring the professional researchers to parity with the Professor series salaries in a transitional manner that does not cause undue budgetary stress on existing extramural grants or other fund sources. How to effect the transition is left to individual campuses, as long as the transition is accomplished within five years.
Policy
Campus guidelines require all professional researcher salaries to reach the top of these salary scale ranges by October 1, 2004, with flexibility on when to move individual professional researchers to that point. Reasonable equity within units and availability of funds should be considered in this process.
For any given individual, salary adjustments can be made in any of (or combination of) the following ways:
- at time of annual range adjustment (including retroactive adjustment to October 1, 1999);
- at reappointment; and/or
- at merit or promotion (the normal documentation is still required for the personnel action.)
Professional Researchers will still be eligible for future range adjustments, which will require manual adjustments by the department/unit in which they reside.
Authority
Deans have the final approval authority for all within step salary adjustments and are responsible for the maintenance of equity within their units and the provision of any funds necessary for salary adjustments. All requests for salary adjustments must be approved in advance by the appropriate dean, with approval notification provided to the Academic Personnel Office.
