Dr. Elizabeth Lord
Vice Provost for Academic Personnel and Professor of Botany and Plant Sciences
Responsibilities
As Vice Provost for Academic Personnel, she has final authority on faculty merit review files and all non-senate academic personnel files; she works with the Academic Personnel Office on all academic approvals, and is responsible for changes to the Call, Chair forums, and other aspects of Faculty Development.
Biography
Professor Elizabeth Lord earned the BA Degree in Biology from the University of Massachusetts in 1972 and the Ph.D. in Botany at the University of California, Berkeley in 1978. After a brief postdoctoral appointment at University of California, Davis, she joined the University of California, Riverside in the Department of Botany and Plant Sciences in 1978. Dr. Lord’s research area is plant cell and developmental biology and she had been funded by NSF’s Developmental Mechanisms Program since 1980. Her work on the mechanisms of fertilization in flowering plants has earned her a national award from the Botanical Society of America. Dr. Lord has served as a Chair of Dept of BPS (1997-2000) after a year as Vice Chair in charge of graduate student affairs. During that time, she co-developed the interdepartmental graduate program in Cell, Molecular and Developmental Biology. Dr. Lord serves on several editorial boards in her field and on NSF review panels. On campus she has chaired the Senate Committee on Academic Personnel and the Committee on Academic Freedom. She served on the Chancellor’s Advisory committee on the Life and Agricultural Sciences and the Graduate Program Developmental Committee. In 1998 she was elected a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. From 2003-2005 she was Associate Dean in the Graduate Division.

Education
BA Biology 1972- University of Massachusetts
PhD Botany 1978- University of California, Berkeley
Research Areas
My interests are in plant developmental biology, with an emphasis on flower organ growth and pollination. A major focus now is the role of the gynoecium in pollination. Our model is that adhesion events between the pollen tube, which carries the sperm cells, and the style facilitate tube cell guidance to the ovary and then fertilization. We have isolated the adhesion molecules from the style using an in vitro adhesion assay that mimics the in vivo interaction between the pollen tube and the style. An exciting new discovery is the lily stigma molecule involved in guiding pollen tubes into the style. This small protein, name Chemocyanin, was discovered using as in vitro chemotropism assay. It is the first chemotropic peptide described for plants (PNAS 2003 100:16125-16130). Our research has been supported by funds from NSF, Developmental Mechanisms since 1980.
